Armita Ghobadi, PhD
Dr. Armita Ghobadi is the director of the Ghobadi Lab at Barnard College, Columbia University. The lab brings together a diverse group of students from different academic backgrounds, institutions, and regions, including Barnard College, Columbia University, Georgia State University, and the University of Fribourg.
Her research focuses on cognitive and linguistic development in children and adults across diverse populations, including monolingual and bilingual individuals, as well as neurotypical and neurodivergent groups. Using advanced computational, machine learning, and predictive modeling approaches, Dr. Ghobadi investigates how individual differences—such as demographic background, cognitive abilities, and language experience—interact with task performance, speech production, and gesture use. Her work aims to elucidate how these factors shape communication and higher-order cognitive processes across development and contexts.
Angela Yun received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with Advanced Honors from Georgia State University and joined the lab in Spring 2023.
She is interested in neurodivergence (including autism and ADHD) and the interplay of language, cognition, and learning. She aspires to become a multilingual developmental psychologist and BCBA -- working to create a meaningful impact on children from diverse and low-income backgrounds.
Cindy Kim earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Georgia State University and joined the lab in Fall 2023.
She is currently exploring a range of interests within psychology, with a particular focus on clinical pediatric psychology. She plans to pursue graduate studies as she works toward a career in the field.
Gabriela Costa is a senior at the Georgia State University Honors College, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She joined the lab in Summer 2025.
Gabriela is deeply interested in understanding human development from a holistic perspective, including biological foundations, cognitive processes, and behavior, with a particular focus on child development and clinical work with children. She plans to pursue graduate training in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and aims to continue expanding her knowledge across multiple areas of psychology.
Darwin Kol is a second-year Psychology major at the Université de Fribourg.
Darwin joined the lab in Summer 2025 and has a broad interest in understanding human behavior and psychological processes. While still exploring his long-term career path, Darwin is interested in pursuing work in the medical field and hopes to one day establish his own clinic in Cambodia, with the goal of applying psychological science to support clinical practice and improve access to care.
Leandra Quick is a senior at Barnard College, Columbia University, majoring in Psychology and Art History.
Her interests center on cognition and perception, with a particular focus on memory, creativity, cognitive bias, and the construction of meaning in both personal and collective contexts. She joined the lab in Fall 2025 and plans to pursue graduate training to become a researcher and enter academia.
Alexander Aponte is a Psychology major at Columbia University. His academic interests include clinical psychology, language, and developmental theory, with a particular emphasis on child development. His interest in developmental work is shaped in part by his experiences with his two-year-old multilingual younger half-brother. He joined the lab in Fall 2025 and plans to pursue clinical training focused on working with children, with the goal of improving access to mental health care in Puerto Rico.
Lea Mizrachi is a student at Columbia College, majoring in Cognitive Science with a specialization in Human–Computer Interaction and minoring in Art History.
She joined the lab in Fall 2025 and is interested in research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and human behavior. She is considering pursuing graduate studies.
Lucia Regue is a student at Columbia University majoring in Cognitive Science. She joined the lab in Fall 2025.
